What is a Balaboosta?
Balaboosta (n.)(bah-lah-b00-sta) A Yiddish term meaning the perfect housewife, homemaker, wonderful mother, cook, and gracious hostess. She does it all and does it well.
I make simple food with easy recipes and I like to try new things. My family and friends love my cooking and always ask me to share, with them, what I know about food, flavor, and technique.

I'm not a professional chef and I've had no formal culinary training. What I know and do in the kitchen comes from three women...Nana, Grandma Della, and Rose, my mom. Each one of them knew more about putting a meal on the table than any fancy chef in a white hat. They were the ultimate Balaboostas.

What I offer you is a lifetime of experience in the kitchen with my compliments and theirs. I hope they'd be proud. I will bring you my recipes as I make them with photos of the actual food I'm preparing. I'm no professional photographer either but I promise, my food will speak for itself in every picture.

The food on my table isn't stacked in a trendy tower.
Instead, my food is stacked with flavor and full of my passion for cooking. So please come in, make yourself comfortable, and enjoy.

Disclaimer: While most of my recipes are "Jewish Style", I do sometimes cook with pork. This might have been a great disappointment to some but my grandmothers knew that I live in modern world. I light Shabbos candles religiously but I have to admit...I do not keep a Kosher home.

Restaurant Review - Congee Queen - Sliced Barbecue Pork, Salt & Pepper Squid, & Tiger Shrimp Chow Mein on Crispy Noodle

Last night we went out. We ate at one of my favorite restaurants in Toronto, The Congee Queen http://www.congeequeen.com/ .
They make exceptionally delicious food at both locations in North York and ThornHill.
We place our standard order everytime we go and we always add one new menu choice. We've been working our way through the menu for a couple of years now. This way we don't get totally stuck ordering and eating the same meal everytime.
Tea is served on every table and the staff and service is welcoming and friendly.
If you go you'll notice that most of the clientele are asian. This tells so much about the authenticity of the food and flavors.

We ordered...
  • Salt and Pepper Squid - which puts any fried calamari you've ever known to shame.

  • Sliced Barbecue Pork - This is a product different from any BBQ pork you think you've had. It is, by far, the most succulent and tender sliced meat I've ever had in my mouth.

Our new menu item selection was...

  • Tiger Shrimp Chow Mein on Crispy Noodle with Bok Choy - This was scrumptious and exactly what it sounds like. Simple, predictable, and delish.

I've used the Congee Queen to cater parties at my home and I eat there, at least, 3 times a month. I've never been disappointed in a meal. They can prepare a party tray from just about any item on their abundant menu and the price is right.

They obviously have amazing quality control in place because you get the same exact dish , same quality, and same mouth watering flavor, every time you order it.
